Evaluation Q3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I gathered 10 people in order to collect primary data on their opinions of our music video. Doing this helped me learn the positive and negative aspects of the video.

From asking our target audience of 13-18 year old teenage girls through a questionnaire, we are pleased to find out that our video matches the conventions of  synthpop genre. The people who disagreed or were unsure about the type of genre thought it could be indie due to the kaleidoscopes. A quote we received was: "My favourite part of the music video was when the artist was laying on the ground amongst the colourful balloons with a birds eye view panning shot". A negative comment we received: "The kaleidoscopes made me think the music video was partly pop and indie genre". The kaleidoscopes were meant to be playful, representing pop however for some of our audience it came across as surrealism relating to the indie genre.

The fact that most of our audience agreed to our music video being mostly played on MTV music channel made us realise how popular it could be as we have embedded pop elements through advertising our artist's brand image of bright, bubbly and playful. The 40% believed our music video could be played on Chart Show as our artist is British, therefore the song would be representing that ethnicity. Someone we interviewed said: "Your music video looks like it belongs the on MTV channel as it fits in with the upbeat pop genre". Another participant said: "I believe your music video would be seen on Chart Show as most of the popular music videos are seen on the countdown".

Most people we asked agreed that our magazine advert and digipak compliments our music video. It was found that 40% of my target audience agreed with this as I stuck with a pink girl theme, along with bubbles which are symbolic throughout the music video, representing that fun aspect of our artist. However another 40% also disagreed as they believed the music video came across more feisty, where as the digipak and magazine advert represented a child-like element. A positive comment involved a participant stating, "the Digipak and magazine advert have clearly taken themes and symbols from the music video making them link, such as the bubbles and the bright colours". Another participant disagreed and believed: "the Digipak and magazine advert do not entirely go hand in hand when complimenting the music video as the bubble gun isn't featured in to represent the initial title of the song".

Positives-
Our target audience enjoyed the upbeat aesthetic of our music video as it consists of the synth pop conventions that we embed in our video.
The target audience got inspiration from our artist as they believe her style was very popular for teenage girls.
They enjoyed the narrative of revenge on her ex- boyfriend as it matched the lyrics of the song.
The hat represents the playful element of the video and the dance was enjoyable for the audience to watch.

Negatives-
Could be less kaleidoscopes in the video.
They thought that perhaps we could develop the narrative so the audience could see what happens to the ex-lover at the end.

Development of my magazine advert

These are the three stages of my magazine advert. The first picture is an outline of the bubble with my artist inside it. I then developed this bubble idea by adding another layer of bubble to make it more clear that my artist has a bubbly and bright image. Finally I decided to use opacity on the bubble over her to make it look like she is inside her own little world. The addition of the feather next to the italic writing imitates my chosen symbol used from my digipak. Along with this, I included the ratings, a quote by MTV to advertise her brand image. I got the logo advertising the song on iTunes so that people will have access to her song online. Again the record label is embedded to convey the genre of the music I am advertising.

5 top original images

I decided to use these 5 images for my digipak and magazine advert as they advertise my artist's brand image and bubbly personality. Alessia is posing with the hat to show off her cheeky and fun side. The bright colours of her clothes and makeup heightens the pop genre as well as illustrating her youth. The vibrant scarf adds a flamboyant style to her brand image as it has a soft texture which also depicts her elegance as a young artist.

Feedback on digipak

I have received targets and feedback from my teacher in which she has suggested for me to use a close up of my artist for the faces of my digipak.

Reflection on magazine advert

After reading and applying the feedback given from my teacher, I made sure my magazine advert fits with the conventions and genre of synthpop. My advert meets the required target audience of young teenage girls as I have used the same colour pink as the basis of my theme, similar to my digipak. The baby blue italic font adds a fun and girly essence, illustrating my artist's brand identity. The bubbles enhance an upbeat element to the music in which my artist is advertising. In addition I added the 'Available on iTunes' logo to show that the music is out online, which enables people to have access to the song. Alongside this, the 'MTV' logo advertises the hottest and newest singles which I thought would be useful to place on my magazine advert, in order to promote the song. My artist's digipak is also advertised in the bubble to show how both themes connect and to promote the album itself so that the audience can go purchase it.

Magazine advert sketch

For my magazine advert I decided to develop the theme of bubbles as it is heavily used throughout my music video; symbolising fun and girly elements of my artist. I envision my magazine advert to have a pink background with my artist posing with the hat inside a large bubble to depict her brand image. Alongside this I thought of making the title of her album in an italic font in either baby blue or white with an outer glow to capture an eye-popping feature on the album. In addition, including the important little features helps advertise the album which is the reason why I chose the iTunes and MTV logo, advertising the synthpop genre. It is also vital to add the rating as it informs the audience on how good the song is or how liked it is by others.

Researching the conventions of magazine adverts

The conventions of these adverts include:

  • The brand image of the artist at the front to sell the album, for each artist the picture varies like Jessie J has a close up shot of her face which illustrates her fierce identity, where as Katy Perry has a more feminie and girly stance to show her bright identity.
  • The colour schemes associated with the brand image of the album itself ie. dark, neutral or bright and bold colours.
  • The logo and special font used, either clear and bold or italic.
  • Release date
  • Availability in stores or iTunes
  • The price
  • The record label is significant as it gives the audience an idea of what genre music they belong to.
  • The A4 size adverts consist of the title and artist's special pose.
The purpose of magazine adverts are to promote the artist and to sell their song, making them more popular in the music industry.

Finished net

Today I managed to finish my digipak and put it into a net. The process included saving each individual image as a jpeg so the image will be in the highest quality. I then opened up photoshop and placed the faces on an A3 sheet. Once I rotated the inner faces 180 degrees it made my finishing product look more like a proper digipak. When the process was completed I saved the digipak as a jpeg and a psd.

Record label research

I decided this record label as it is the first label Chvrches got signed to, therefore it relates to the synthpop genre.

Atlantic records is an American record label best known for its numerous recordings of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, jazz, and hip hop. However I thought that the bright bold colours would add to the synth pop, girly genre relating to my artist's brand identity.
Capitol records advertises various different genres such as Katy Perry, which is symbolic of pop theme. Her quirky and colourful brand image sets an influential aspect which I decided to use for my artist.
Virgin Records, Ltd. is a record label founded by English entrepreneur Richard Branson.

Photoshoot Sketch

Here is a sketch of some ideas I had for my album cover, featuring the artist (Alessia). I included the sun hat and a scarf to enhance the girly theme and the hat is used to show off her brand image, along with her signature curly hair.

Photoshop Tutorial Skills For Digipak

The design is made up of layers so I could easily place my background on it as a base for editing once unlocking it. I then had to re-size the image of my artist by clicking 'edit' and 'free transform'. Once my image was where I wanted it to be placed, using the quick selection tool I cut out the background and smoothed out the edges with the eraser tool. To add a text I help the 'T' button and 'FX' to add effects to my layers.
Overall, Adobe Photoshop was very easy to use and very effective when editing my images for my digipak as the four sections for my CD were very accessible.

Photoshop Tutorial

During our lesson, we were shown the various tools used to photoshop a famous artist onto a background of our choice. We began by selecting the background and fitting it into the A4 portrait sqaure, then we had to add another layer to place our chosen artist. Once we had completed this we clicked onto the picture of our artist and held it over the tab with the background and placed it on top of that photo. After this we used the magic wand tool to cut carefully around our artist so they fit onto the background well.
If we made a mistake by cropping past the outline of our artist, then we could click the minus button to undo the mistake. Once the artist is cut out, we added a title to make the picture look like the front cover of a real album.
The picture below is the progress I have made so far.

Digipak Moodboard

I decided to use the italic font on the right because it demonstrates femininity and heightens the sense of the pop genre.

Big voluminous hair depicts the cheeky and sassy confidence which is what Carmen and I chose for our artist within the music video. Alongside this, the aspect of curly hair shows our artist is wild and free.

The cheeky pose and grin below illustrates the power women have over men, this idea is incorporated in our narrative as our artist shows she can be independent without her man and uses cheeky facial expressions to come across as flirtatious and engaging with the audience.

The sun hat adds to the cheeky and flamboyant element of our artist as she poses with the hat, bringing life and youth hitting our target audience.

The three outfits I found are ideas I will consider for my digipak as they are bright and colourful, representing the girly aspect as well as representing the typical tight teenage clothing.

The park on a sunny day would be a nice location to photograph our artist as the natural lighting will make the image look more younger and fresh which sells her brand image. If it's slightly windy, it could help to provide more volume to our artist's hair, creating a confident aura.

Front and back of digipak (original ideas)

Here is the back of my digipak where I decided to choose a garden for the background as it is symbolic of freedom and independence. My artist is wearing the hat, showing off her brand image. Alongside this, her pink jumper and complementary colourful scarf adds to the feminine pop theme I'm trying to advertise. The font of the tracklist has a glowing effect and a black outline making it easier for the targeted audience (13-18 year old teenagers) to read. Due to the colourful background, I believe the mostly females would be drawn to buy the album.

The front of my digipak consists of the artist posing with the hat and giving a cheeky grin to illustrate a playful element. I chose colourful balloons as the background as a symbol of the heart shaped balloon in the music video. I selected an italic font to captivate the audience and to heighten the pop aspect. I chose the colour pink, as it fits with the pink theme of her jumper and the balloons.
